Research programs an Innovation Fund for asbestos goes back three years.
Workplace Relations Minister Chris Evans says that more than 600 Australians died from asbestosis last year and the problem is still growing.
"In fact we see a surge in people affected in the next 10 years," he said.
President of the Association of victims of asbestos in Southern Australia, Terry Miller, shall apply for the money.
"Until there is a breakthrough for really treat the disease, there is never enough money to do what we need to do," he said.
Research funding will be coordinated by the Government agency Comcare.
